My Eid On-Call

LoL the title sounds like an episode from Scrubs..

Aaaanyway..

I volunteered to be on call on the first day of Eid as you already know.. Turned out it wasn't a bad idea after all..We had a breakfast in the conference room (thrown by my beloved Nephro team)..

The only problem is, I went to the hosp without having any sleep, so go figure!
I was on call with Dr. K. Eid.. (sense the irony!).. She was kind enough to take my pager for some time (I'm not sure, it could've been a minute, and it could've been a couple of hours!).. As soon as she took it, I went into a coma..

Aaaanyway.. The wards were quiet, so after a while, she joined me for a slumber party..

Everything was quiet until I got a page:
me: hello?
him: is this dr. julz? (lol ok, he said my name)
me: yes, who's this?
him: I'm dr. Raju (a registrar)
me: *yawning sleepily* yes dr, what can i do for u?
him: there's a patient in room 130 bed 1, i want you to call ortho for a consultation..
me: *obviously sleeping* ok sure, but dr. I'm kinda swamped with work right now, if it's not urgent, can i do it when im done with what i have in hand?
him: sure, but please do it as soon as u have time..
me: sure no probs..

"me" went back to sleep.. lol

4 hours later, I get another page:
him: dr. Julz, I just called ortho to ask them for their evaluation, and they said u never called for a consult!!!
me: *still sleeping* ummm, huh?
him: did you call ortho?
me: ummm, ortho?
him: for room 130 bed 1?
me: ummm, 130 bed 1?
him: r u the doc that answered my page 4 hours ago?
me: *scared now* 4 HOURS AGO???!!!
him --> veeeeeeeerrryyyyyyy maaaaaaaaaad!!
me --> veeeeeeeerryyyyyyyy screwwwwwed!

Now don't worry the patient won't die because of my misbehaviour.. Dr. Raju could've suffered a heart attack because of me though loool

haha
so you mean to say that you have a bunch of demi-devils running around the hospital!

oh and by the way don't worry about what others think of you as a doctor! people sometimes forget that doctors are human as well prone to fatigue, forgetfulness and the occasional laziness!

I wish that Saudi Doctors' (and interns!) stories would become more like "ER" more than "Scrubs"... I read an article about medical malpractice in KSA and its scary!!

Sorry Jewlz but I have to agree with its (whoever that is!)... there's nothing to laugh about (unlike what I see from other bloggers here..)

oh please...it was just a consultation..stop acting as if u guys would turn the whole world around if u were in her place...
Being Doctors doesnt strip us from human weakness u know.

true, we are all prone to weaknesses and misshapps... but its no laughing matter... I lost a 18 year old cousin to medical malpractice and i find nothing amuzing about it...

People, people go easy on the girl.
Life & Death arn't realy up to us or even the best doctor. I've seen doctors do everything right and still lose.

Yep, I've seen my uncle who passed away 2 years ago suffering from a severe lung infection..and I've seen how carless was his supervising doctor. The sad thing is that he was in king faisal hospital, the BEST hospital in the kingdom, supposedly.
My uncle was hospitalized for 2 weeks, I stayed with him during this whole period and guess what! the bastard came to see his patient TWICE! only TWICE in 2 weeks...

Jewelz, ur still an intern..u got alot to learn..my advice, never do that again!!

P.S. to all of u guys who took this as a joke, would u still laugh if this patient was someone u care about?! I dont think so ;)

You people got the story all wrong:
1. a consultation is calling another doctor from another team to check the patient and clear him from his side to be discharged, or to be changed under his care.
2. I'm an intern, it's not my job to write consultations, you know we just do scut work.
3. the dr. already wrote the consultation n just wanted me to remind the ortho team.. it's not my fault that consultants in this country need interns to freshen up their memories..
4. no one of you could possibly be more compassionate or sensitive than i am when it comes to patients, I would rather lie down on a white bed and die instead of letting myself be the reason of someone else suffering!
5. I made a mistake by going without sleep, and I learn from my mistakes!
6. Now any of you have the guts to look me in the eye and say they never got too sleepy to answer without thinking and forgot everything when they woke up?

ahmed : sorry for your lose, but all i can say is I've been there!

So have I, and I know exactly how it feels to see doctors treating someone dear to you with less effort than you would like... My uncle Allah yir7amo, he was one of the first doctors to start practice in Jeddah once told me that it's not hard to find a doctor who carries out his practice properly, but what is hard is to find a good Dr. who also knows how to treat patients and their families on an emotional level! Most doctors are either too cold, seem too unconcerned or say too little... They have to understand that a big part of being a good doctor is being able to connect and click with the patients and their families! I wish to see more doctors who can do that...
